So I don’t put anything on here for ages then here I am writing twice. Had to be done though.
On Wednesday night I finally got to see ‘1395 Days Without Red’ - something that I’d heard of while back in Edinburgh then by chance saw a flyer for it in a corridor at Goldsmiths and remembered that I’d wanted to see it/them.
I say it/them because there are two films with this name, both based on the same concept: a woman walks through the streets of Sarajevo during its siege (for 1395 days, 1992-1996) and the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra continues to play. During the siege residents were advised to wear dark colours and to run across certain streets in order to avoid being shot by the snipers on the hills above the city.
It’s an inquiry into how we interact with the city and how exterior events may disrupt or form our everyday patterns of being. I loved the rhythms it sets up against the soaring music of the orchestra (in her mind as well as in the room in which they are playing). The set up for the screening was great too - a warehouse. Although absolutely freezing it had a great atmosphere. This was the first Art Angel project/exhibition that I’d (knowingly) gone to see. There are a couple more from this season that I’ll definitely be going along to.
