I must admit, I’ve been a little lose with the pennies recently… but I’d like to think it’s worth it (worth it) especially when you get to see films like this: ‘Alois Nebel’ is based on a Czech graphic novel trilogy of the same name and is set amidst two key historical events in (the then) Czechoslovakia - the expulsion of the Germans after WW2 and the Velvet Revolution. It’s a visually stunning film with a great soundtrack to match (my use of the word ‘soundtrack’ here might be misleading, I think I generally mean the sound design rather than the score composition). It’s the director’s first feature film and is the Czech nomination for next year’s Oscars. Although there is a narrative (railway man, ominous stranger, revealed connections) I think it’s more a film about the landscape, history, context and perhaps ultimately love. It’s just so beautiful! You must see it.
YOU MUST.
